Falun Dafa practitioner Mr. Wang Liwu from Qingyang City, Gansu Province, went to Beijing to appeal for justice for Falun Dafa in 2001. He was detained in Qingyang City Detention Centre, where he suffered a fractured skull and a mental breakdown. Mr. Wang's mental state was so confused as a result of the torture that he took his own life by drinking agricultural chemicals, even though the teachings of Falun Dafa prohibit all killing, including suicide.

Mr. Wang Liwu was 38 years old and lived in Taile Village, Qingcheng County. He began practising Falun Dafa in 1996 and had been solidly cultivating. He went to appeal in Beijing in June 2001 and was arrested, detained in Gansu Province Beijing Liaison Office, and released after he went on a hunger strike for a week. After returning home, Mr. Wang went to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) County Committee to tell them the facts of Falun Dafa and requested that they return his Falun Dafa books that they had confiscated. The police arrested him and detained him in the Qingyang City Detention Centre for 25 days. Prisoners were encouraged to torture him brutally and did not allow him to do the exercises. Mr. Wang was cruelly beaten while tied up with ropes.

Mr. Wang went to the CCP Prefecture Committee to appeal for Falun Dafa and was arrested on the way home. He was again put in the Qingyang City Detention Centre and brutally tortured, resulting in severe damage to his mental and physical health. His thoughts were fuzzy after returning home, and he often had headaches. When one of his family members sent him to the hospital, the doctors found that one side of his skull was fractured. Soon after, he suffered a mental breakdown and died from drinking agricultural chemicals.
