Falun Dafa practitioner Mr. Ma Zexuan from Tianjin was arrested by the local police for practising Falun Gong. He was detained first in the Shuangkou Forced Labour Camp, then in the Qingbowa Forced Labour Camp and later in the Ji County Yushan Forced Labour Camp. The guards in the forced labour camps brutally tortured Mr. Ma with such inhuman methods that his pancreas ruptured. Then he was subjected to brainwashing until finally he suffered a mental collapse.

Mr. Ma Zexuan, 59 years old, is a farmer from the Wuqing District of Tianjin. He was sentenced to forced labour in 2000 for practising Falun Gong. He was subjected to brutal torture in the Shuangkou Forced Labour Camp of Tianjin and then was released for medical reasons.

In May 2002, Mr. Ma was arrested again and detained in Tianjin's Qingbowa Forced Labour Camp. Two weeks later, he was transferred to the Ji County Yushan Forced Labour Camp in Tianjin. Police guard Li Lixin and inmate Yang Shaolin from the Third Brigade tortured Mr. Ma Zexuan with inhuman methods.

Yang Shaolin and other inmates in the Shuangkou Forced Labour Camp used various brutal tortures on Mr. Ma and other practitioners. Instructed by police, the inmates cuffed Mr. Ma's hands separately to the metal bars of a bunk bed with his feet suspended above the floor. The inmates sat on the bottom bed and watched Mr. Ma for a long time. Sometimes, the inmates would jab a needle used for sewing footballs into Mr. Ma's leg.

One day in August, the inmates made a bag from an old cotton overall. They put the bag tightly over Mr. Ma's head and secured it at the neck, making it difficult for him to breathe. Then the inmates started to punch and kick him in his abdomen. Mr. Ma was hurt badly, and he struggled and cried out in distress. One inmate punched Mr. Ma very hard in the stomach area, causing his pancreas to rupture. To avoid paying Mr. Ma's medical bills, the labour camp sent Mr. Ma home.

On October 1st 2002, after learning that Mr. Ma had recovered, the forced labour camp sent staff to bring him back to the forced labour camp. He was secretly detained in the Third Brigade of the Ji County Yushan Forced Labour Camp.

Early in 2003, the forced labour camp established a special brigade for persecuting Falun Gong practitioners. Policeman Li Zhan was appointed as the instructor, Wang Bodong as brigade leader, and Zhang Xuyong, Li Lixin, and Jiang Yongliu as unit chiefs. Motivated by an award of 3000 yuan1for each Falun Gong practitioner "transformed,"2these brigade leaders viciously punched and kicked Mr. Ma, shocked him with electric batons for long periods of time, deprived him of sleep for a long time by stabbing him with a needle if he closed his eyes, stripped him of his clothes and froze him outside by constantly pouring cold water on him. Inmate Yang Shaolin also participated in the persecution.

In an attempt to break Mr. Ma mentally, the guards and the forced labour camp authorities invited spies who pretended to be Falun Gong practitioners to brainwash Mr. Ma night and day. They played videos attacking Falun Gong and used every deception imaginable on him. Eventually, he suffered a complete mental collapse. At the end of spring in 2004, the forced labour camp had to send Mr. Ma Zexuan home on a medical parole.
