Falun Dafa practitioner Ms. Qu Shumei of Dalian City, Liaoning Province, was arrested again and sentenced to forced labour for two and a half years in May 2004. She is imprisoned in the First Brigade of the Masanjia Forced Labour Camp and is being severely persecuted. Her husband, Mr. Zhu Changbin, was sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment and is in Dabei Prison in Shengyang City.

So far, Ms. Qu Shumei has been refusing to cooperate with demands to wear a prison uniform or perform hard labour.

Ms. Qu and her husband Mr. Zhu were once part of a happy family of three. After the persecution began in 1999, both were arrested and subjected to extortion many times by Jiang Zemin's regime. On September 28th 2000, Ms. Qu was arrested by police from the Nansha Police Station of Shahekou District, Dalian City, for posting leaflets exposing the persecution. At the police station, Ms. Qu was severely abused and persecuted by one female and three male police officers. She refused to reveal the origin of the leaflets. Her arms were handcuffed behind her back and her legs were brutally beaten. They then pulled her up by her handcuffs repeatedly until the handcuffs broke the flesh. When one part of her body was torn by such torture, they would work on another part. Her hands were swollen and the pain was so excruciating that she could not even stand up.

Ms. Qu Shumei was sentenced to two years of forced labour and sent to Dalian Forced Labour Camp, where she was brutally persecuted. She developed scabies, which itched unbearably. Every night, she slept for only two to three hours. During the day, she was either working or forced to sit on a small stool. She was not allowed to speak to anyone at all. On March 19th 2001, the enforced "transformation"1of many Falun Dafa practitioners began. Practitioners were forced to put their hands on their heads while bending 90 degrees with their legs spread wide apart. At the same time, many words defaming Falun Dafa and its founder were placed in front of them. When Ms. Qu went on a hunger strike, she was isolated and monitored separately. She developed a high fever and blood appeared in her stool. In March 2001, she was bailed out for medical treatment.

In April 2001, Ms. Qu and her husband, Mr. Zhu, were forced to move from place to place in order to avoid being persecuted. During that time, they lived in rented houses. On the morning of April 22nd 2002, a few plainclothes officers and regular police officers barged into their rented house and ransacked the place. They detained the couple at the police station overnight. They were not given any food while detained, but they were beaten and questioned before they were sent to Dalian Detention Centre. On June 3rd Ms. Qu was released, but her husband was sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment during the Chinese New Year of 2003. He has been incarcerated at Dabei Prison.

After being home for a month, Ms. Qu was abducted to the Dalian Forced Labour Camp again. She was brutally tortured, sexually abused, and even locked up in a small cage. She experienced many kinds of tortures. One of them was being handcuffed to a metal pole with her feet barely touching the ground. She was suspended this way for 48 hours without being allowed to close her eyes. The police guards even ordered the criminal inmates to viciously beat and torture Ms. Qu. Her arm, waist and one leg were tied to metal poles, then her other leg was pulled until both legs formed a straight line. After that, the criminal inmates kicked her lower body with their shoes and used wooden planks to hit her. They even pinched and twisted her breasts, tied her lower body with a rope and pulled on it, threw chili powder into her eyes and rubbed it in open wounds, and pushed a mop handle into her mouth and vagina. They repeatedly tortured her this way.

In late February 2003, Ms. Qu was finally released. However, on April 19th 2004, she was again arrested by Xinghaiwan Police Station officers for telling the facts of Falun Dafa to people who had been misled by the government propaganda. On April 20th 2004, the police used a master key to open her front door and ransacked the place. They confiscated all Falun Dafa materials and about three thousand yuan2in cash. The police even forced Ms. Qu's teenage son to sign some papers.

Ms. Qu Shumei and her husband are both being detained and her 16-year-old son is being taken care of by her parents.
