Mr. Pang Xuehai, 53, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Administration, his wife Kong Daiyou and mother-in-law Xu Bingmei (78 years old) are all practitioners of Falun Dafa. On January 4, 2001, the authorities forced the couple to attend a brainwashing class. Kong was sentenced to a labour camp later, and Pang is still being held in a detention centre. The 78-year-old mother, who was partially disabled, was left alone and uncared for at home. Pang's workplace bought the elderly lady a carton of instant noodles as her daily food; still, she passed away in July 2001.

Three years ago, the elderly lady was diagnosed with cancer and given six months to live. After she practiced Falun Gong, however, she survived without care and aid until six months after her children were arrested. According to regulations, both children were eligible for a 15-day leave to deal with funeral affairs, but because of their determination in practicing Falun Gong, only Kong was allowed to take a two-day leave.

When the Nanhu Police Station kidnapped Pang and his wife on January 4th last year, the policemen didn’t follow any legal procedures. Pang pointed out this fact in a serious manner, but the policemen refused to answer. Pang once won a prize for one of his inventions in the 80's, and he made new discoveries about his previous invention during the detention period. He applied to go back to his former post to carry out the research several times to the authorities concerned, but the detention centre withheld his letters. When he asked the authorities of the detention centre, he got this reply: "We don't intend to keep you here, but the matter is decided by the politics & law committee."

Up until now the detention centre is still holding 8 practitioners. It is said that the northern city politics & law committee is primarily in charge of the case, and they plan to send these practitioners to a brainwashing class. But so far, these officials have not dared to talk directly with the detained practitioners.

Below are the names of some other practitioners who are illegally detained:

He Lingling, female, arrested at the railway station on her way to peacefully appeal in Beijing for a stop to the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. She was sentenced to 2 years in a forced labour camp, and the sentence expires in 2002. Now she has been transferred from the forced labour camp to a detention centre, but there has still been no sign that she will be released.

Yan Yule, high school student was taken away without any legal procedures from her classroom last January. Her mother was sentenced to a forced labour camp too.
Lin Meilian, Su Ren, and Huang Yingxian, have been detained for more than one year, and haven’t talked to any officials about the length of their detainment in the detention centre. No one knows how long they will be imprisoned.
Xu Yuhe, a graduate student, was arrested for practicing Falun Gong at home. He has been in detention for more than a year.

A female student of a business school (name unclear).
Lu Lihua, released by the labour camp but was re-arrested after going back to teach in her former school. It took her father, a Party member and general secretary of a unit, four months to find out that his daughter had been unreasonably imprisoned in a detention centre.

All these practitioners have been imprisoned for a long time. They don't know how long they will continue to be detained and they are still required by the detention centre to pay a 25 Yuan [500 Yuan is the monthly wage of an average urban worker] food bill every day. When some of their families came to ask for their release, they were ordered to pay a 1,000-2,000 Yuan fee without a receipt. The families without the money have no choice but to see their loved ones stay in the detention centre.
