The Epoch Times: Former Chief of Shengyang Justice Bureau speaks of his exile

Former Chief of the Justice Bureau in Shenyang City Han Guangsheng defected to Canada in 2001. Recently, there have been many media reports about him. In response, Han Guangsheng made the following statement on July 4, 2005.

Recently, the Canadian media interviewed me, and many media, including some Chinese media, have reprinted the interview from different angles. Some of them did not accurately represent my own opinions but have misleading content. Responding to this, I believe it is necessary for me to make a statement.

First of all, from my personal standpoint, I went into exile because I was extremely disappointed with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). I started my career with the dream of "serving the people," but my biggest practical experience is "police colluding with gangsters."

I served in the CCP's authoritarian regime for a long time, but the CCP's tyranny and corruption run against my own wish to bring peace and safeguard justice. If I did not follow the command to crack down on innocent people, I would be considered an alien element and severely punished by the Party. I was greatly pained.

The Tiananmen Massacre of 1989 made me see clearly that what the CCP says is all false, and its claim of the "interests of the people above all" is a lie. Whenever it has a conflict with the people, the CCP would use the army to carry out a bloody crackdown without hesitation.

The CCP's persecution of innocent and kind Falun Gong practitioners made me feel even more hopeless. Acting out of sympathy with them and following my conscience I made use of the power I had to lighten their suffering as much as possible. What I could do was very limited, and could not ease my guilt. I felt ashamed living that way. This was the real motive behind my leaving the CCP. I gave up my high post and good salary without hesitation and came to Canada in September 2001.

Two days after my arrival in Canada I wrote my resignation letter and resigned all my posts inside and outside of the Party in Mainland China. In the beginning, I just wanted to leave the tyranny, dictatorship, duplicity, corruption and deceit of the CCP and to live a clean and free life like a human being. In the beginning, I did not think of exposing the CCP's evilness publicly, and the reason was mainly my fear of the CCP's cruelty and terror.

I was very concerned about my family members who live in China. Having lived under the CCP's control, who is not shadowed by fear? Particularly because of the nature of my previous job in China, I know better than others the terror that the CCP uses on the Chinese people, whether they are inside or outside of China.

There are several reasons why I speak out publicly now.

After carefully reading the "Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party," I feel even stronger that the CCP's rule that is forced upon the Chinese people is a tragedy for the Chinese nation. Therefore, I admire very much the courage in of former CCP diplomat in Sydney Chen Yonglin and former "6-10 Office" officer Hao Fengjun, who came out publicly to resign from the CCP and to expose its crimes. I would like to come out to support them so that they know they are not alone. In the past, my main concern was my family inside mainland China; lately I learned that whether I speak out or not the CCP has never stopped monitoring my family. So I decided to come out in support of Chen Yonglin and Hao Fengjun, hoping to encourage more Chinese to break away from the CCP and to choose to live according to their own conscience.

My refugee application has been rejected, and I feel this is not just my personal affair. It concerns the future and hope of many other conscientious Chinese officials who, just like me, want to break away from the CCP. I feel the responsibility to speak to the public and to help the Canadian government and people understand better the truth about the CCP. In China, the CCP could force the majority to be the accomplices of its inhuman legal system, otherwise they would become the targets to be struck by this inhuman system.

To those who want neither to be accomplices nor to be dictated to, the western world should help them find their hope and path. Otherwise, without hope, the CCP officials would have to be loyal to the Party, and they would only feel despair. I am grateful for a comment made by a internet surfer, "Give Han Guangsheng political asylum, there will be fewer and fewer sincere accomplices of the CCP's inhuman political system; refuse Han Guangsheng's political asylum application, there will be more and more evildoers in the CCP's inhuman political system."

Many people asked me whether I chose exile because of economic problems. I want to tell everyone that I left because of my conscience. I do not want to sacrifice my life for the CCP any longer; I do not want to betray my conscience any longer. This is the most fundamental reason. I gave up my comfortable living conditions inside Mainland China to come here. To make a living, I do manual labor, drive taxies and manage small businesses. I live simply, but the money I make is clean.

Responding to all kinds of reactions from overseas Chinese, especially various guesses and comments from people who came from mainland China, I want to tell you: Although with different reasons we all chose not to live under the CCP's control, I love my homeland and the people there just the same as you. The CCP is not China and it does not represent the Chinese people. I speak out publicly so that more people will have the opportunity to break away from the CCP and to gain light and freedom.
