Mr. Wan Jixiang was an employee of the Yincheng City Department of Industry and Commerce in Yincheng City, Hubei Province. He was cruelly persecuted at Caidian Detention Centre in Hanyang City. As a result, he became deaf in his left ear. On June 28, 2003, Mr. Wan was sentenced to Qingduankou Prison, where he suffered unbearable stress and had to perform excessive, hard labour. His hair turned grey, and the pain in his left ear intensified. On May 24, 2005, he died from the persecution.

Mr. Wan Jixiang, 37 years old, had suffered many illnesses before he began to practise Falun Gong in 1997. Two weeks into the practice, his illnesses were cured. He was a tax-collector and was responsible for collecting management fees from vegetable merchants. Before he practised Falun Gong, he often had arguments with these merchants. As a practitioner, he lived by the principles, "Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance." He treated people honestly and fairly. He would pay the fees for the elderly who could not afford to pay. In 1998, he was chosen as a model worker by his workplace.

Within three months after Jiang's regime started his persecution of Falun Gong, Mr. Wan was detained three times for a total of 47 days. During his detention, his salary was suspended. He was forced to pay 600 yuan (1) in "living expenses" to the detention centre, and another 5,000 yuan as a so-called "earnest-fee." In the middle of winter, he was forced to wear shoes soaked in ice water and stand barefoot in a bucket filled with ice water. He shivered from the cold. His arms were covered with scars from cigarette burns. Several times, he was so viciously beaten by criminal inmates that he lost consciousness.

In January 2001, police from Dongmafang Police Station sent Mr. Wan to the Yincheng City No. 1 Detention Centre. Mr. Wan's father was deeply disturbed because of the mistreatment of his son and suffered an anxiety attack. He succumbed to the pressure and passed away. In September 2001, staff from Dongmafang Police Station and the local 610 Office (2) tried again to arrest Mr. Wan and ransacked his home. Mr. Wan was forced to become homeless to avoid further persecution. This did not prevent the police and staff from the 610 Office from frequently harassing his wife and daughter.

Eight months after Mr. Wan left home, he was arrested at Zhongjia Village, Wuhan City. Police officer Cheng Changming and a dozen other officers interrogated Mr. Wan. They pushed him to the ground and stepped on his head. He was put in handcuffs and shackles. One of the police burned his chin with a lighter. Mr. Wan was detained first at the Hanyang No. 2 Detention Centre, then at Caidian Detention Centre. While he was at Caidian Detention Centre, the police ordered inmate Li Yuhua to torture Mr. Wan, using a number of different tortures. Mr. Wan was beaten daily. As a result, his body was covered with black and purple bruises, and his left ear became permanently deaf.

On June 28, 2003, Mr. Wan was sentenced and taken to Qingduankou Prison. The guards at the prison instructed prisoners to beat Mr. Wan. They forced him to squat down for a long period of time. They also threatened, "If he is not "transformed" within a week, torture him until he dies." Under unbearable pressure and excessive hard labor, Mr. Wan's hair turned grey. His left ear became more painful. In addition, a tumour was found in his throat that caused severe pain. Later he was diagnosed with throat cancer. Prison authorities did not want to pay the medical costs and were afraid that Mr. Wan would die in prison. To evade responsibility, the prison told Mr. Wan's work unit, his family and his local police station to apply for a medical parole. However, Nie Moshan from the State Security Unit of the Yincheng Police Department postponed completing the required documentation over and over again. Finally, after continued urgent requests by Mr. Wan's family and numerous phone calls from practitioners worldwide, telling people the truth about Falun Dafa and requesting Mr. Wan's release, Mr. Wan was released for medical treatment in 2004.

Immediately after his release, Mr. Wan was fired from his job. He no longer earned an income. He was extremely weak and suffered intense pain. He was not able to care for himself. In the morning on May 24, 2005, Mr. Wan died.

(1) "Yuan" is the Chinese currency; 500 yuan is equal to the average monthly income of an urban worker in China.

(2) "The 610 office" is an agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong, with absolute power over each level of administration in the Party and all other political and judiciary systems.
