The Persecution against 51 Year Old Ms. Tan Shaolan in Chengdu City

Ms. Tan Shaolan, 51, is a retired employee from the Sichuan First Cotton and Kapok Factory in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province. She started to cultivate Falun Dafa in 1994 and has benefited tremendously from the practice, both physically and mentally, and her firm belief in Dafa is unshakable.

After Jiang Zemin's regime started to persecute Falun Gong, in order to ask for justice for Falun Dafa, Ms. Tan exercised her constitutional right of appeal and kept going to Beijing to appeal. She was unlawfully detained many times. After Ms. Tan Shaolan was sent back from Beijing, not only was her pension stopped, she was not even allowed the most basic living expenses.

By September 2, 2002, Ms. Tan really could no longer get by, so she went to the security section of her factory and asked them to pay her enough to live on. Zhong Wei from the security section, who specialized in persecuting Falun Gong practitioners and who was the individual behind the suspension of Ms. Tan's pension, refused to give back Ms. Tan's pension and verbally abused her. He escorted Ms. Tan to the Pi County Detention Centre in Chengdu City and detained her there for one month. She was then transferred to the social security detention centre for 15 days.

Though Ms. Tan Shaolan had lost her source of income, she still didn't want to give up practising Falun Gong. One evening in mid-September 2003, officials went to the cotton factory dormitory where Ms. Tan stayed, arrested her without cause, and sent her to the Xinjin "legal system study class" in Chengdu City, where they brainwashed her and detained her for one year and four months. They didn't release her until January 25, 2005, by which time Ms. Tan had been tortured to such an extent that she had become numb and seemingly mentally unbalanced, and could not take care of herself. This "legal system study class" had persecuted a normal person until she became disabled. They also made Ms. Tan's family pay 750 yuan (1) per month for her living expenses while in the class. Zhong Wei from the security section of the cotton factory continued to take away Ms. Tan's pension deposit of 560 yuan per month. Ms. Tan's pension will not be reinstated until she pays the entire 12,000 yuan in living expenses for her one year and four months' detention in the legal system study class. Even if she were to lose all of her pension, keeping nothing to live on, she would still need another 190 yuan every month to pay the above-mentioned expense. It is obvious that Ms Tan is being condemned to a hopeless situation. Her experience is an example of how ruthless the Chinese Communist regime is in carrying out Jiang Zemin's policy against Falun Gong practitioners to "ruin their (the practitioners') reputations, bankrupt them financially and destroy them physically."
