Through the various activities held to promote Falun Gong and tell people about the persecution, more and more residents in Cham, a small city in the Bavarian Forest area, have got a good understanding of Falun Gong. Falun Gong practitioners contacted a local school requesting permission to hold a nine-day Falun Gong workshop. The school principal gave them his hearty assent and promised to offer a classroom and some facilities free of charge. The principal also offered help with preparations for the workshop.

Four local newspapers and some newspapers from neighbouring cities published adverts for the Falun Gong workshop. One of them even printed a report about the workshop on its front page, as well as a thesis by an American medical doctor about Falun Gong’s beneficial influence on human health. Consequently, Falun Gong became a popular topic among residents. The number of people who enrolled at the workshop was larger than expected. Therefore, the principal re-arranged another larger classroom for us.

People of all ages and from various walks of life participated in the workshop: children, teenagers, college students, housewives, engineers, and retired couples. The participants gave positive feedback and thought of Falun Gong as an upright cultivation method. It seemed as if a candle had been lit in the depth of their hearts. They thought Falun Gong was good and easy to learn. Also practising the exercises made them feel comfortable.

When Master Li Hongzhi first introduced Falun Gong to the public in China from 1992 to 1994, he taught the practice through a series of nine-day lectures. Practitioners now hold nine-day lecture sessions to spread the practice by playing a videotape of Master Li’s lectures for people to learn before teaching them the exercises. The practitioners also talked about their own experiences of how they had heard of Falun Gong and shared their thoughts during the nine-day workshop. They felt happy for the people who finally had the chance to learn about Falun Gong.

During the nine-day workshop, the practitioners also played some short films about Falun Gong and answered some questions about the persecution against the practice in China. Meanwhile, many of the Cham people signed a petition to call for an immediate end to the persecution. Some of them wanted their friends or relatives to understand Falun Gong and thus asked for extra leaflets. They also asked for phone numbers of practice sites in other cities in the hope that their relatives could learn the practice. Finally, the first nine-day Falun Gong workshop came to a conclusion winning sincere applause from the audience.
