On 18 July 2001, a seminar was held in the UK Parliament to discuss the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China. The seminar was chaired by Lord Avebury, Vice-Chair of the Parliamentary Human Rights Group. Speakers included Mary Lawlor, former Director of Amnesty International Ireland (1989-2001), and Dr Declan Lyons, a psychiatrist at Maudsley Hospital, who studied China's abuse of psychiatry to torture practitioners.

The UK Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party, Mr Tony Blair, sent his good wishes. In a letter to the Falun Gong Association (UK), the Prime Minister's Private Secretary said "The Prime Minister has asked me to thank you for your letter of 29 June inviting him to attend the seminar 'Why is Falun Gong persecuted in China?' on Wednesday 18 July. Sadly, the Prime Minister's existing diary commitments that day make it impossible for him to join you at the Houses of Parliament, ... but [he] has asked me to pass on to you and all concerned his good wishes."

The office of the UK Foreign Secretary, Mr Jack Straw, wrote to the Falun Gong Association (UK) and said in the letter "Please accept the Foreign Secretary's best wishes for a successful seminar." The Leader of the Liberal Democrate Party, Mr Charles Kennedy, and the Leader of the Conservative Party, Mr William Hague, also sent, by letter, their best wishes through their respective offices.

Baroness Nicholson, Vice Chairperson of the European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee sent her good wishes for "every success with your event". John Wilkinson MP said in his letter "I support your campaign against the persecution of the Falun Gong in the PRC". Brian Simpson MEP wrote "Please also be assured of my continuing support". Nigel Evans MP wished "the event every success". Mrs Eryl McNally MEP wrote "thank you for keeping me informed and best wishes for a very successful event." Over 20 UK parliamentarians sent their good wishes and many more requested further information and seminar proceedings.
