Ms. Liu Guohua, 61, the wife of retired Beijing Machine Tool Institute employee, Ge Peijun, passed away on February 28, 2004. Her death was the result of being frequently harassed by the authorities, and by her husband's persecution in a labour camp. These caused her long-term mental stress, which led to the recurrence of an old illness.

The couple began their Falun Gong practice in 1998. After the persecution of Falun Gong on July 20, 1999 by Jiang Zemin's regime, they went to Beijing to appeal to the government. Both of them were illegally arrested and jailed for more than a month before being released.

On September 17, 2002, Xu Minrui, deputy secretary of Ge Peijun's work unit, and Guo Yahuang of the public security division, collaborated with police and arrested Ge Peijun. He was sent home only after being tortured nearly to the point of dying. After a short recuperation, when asked why he was in such bad shape, he replied, "I was thrown into jail and persecuted by the Communist Party because I practise Falun Gong." After hearing this comment, police arrested him again, and sentenced him to two years of hard labour.

Unable to cope with the long-term mental stress from both her own harassment by security officials, and her husband's persecution in the labour camp, Ms. Liu Guohua passed away on February 28, 2004.
