Falun Dafa practitioner Ms. Cheng Zongzhan from Baoding City, Hebei Province, was repeatedly persecuted. She died in May 2004 as a result of the injustices she suffered.

Ms. Cheng Zongzhan was 44 years old. She started practising Falun Dafa in 1999, and she appealed in Beijing on July 20, 1999. She returned to Beijing many times thereafter and repeatedly appealed for justice for Falun Dafa.

Once on her way to Beijing, she was illegally arrested and detained in Beijing for over a month. Because she refused to divulge her name, she suffered inhuman tortures. Yet Ms. Cheng remained true to Dafa, and she was eventually released after protesting the persecution by staging a hunger strike.

In November 2002, Ms. Cheng was abducted from her house and taken to a brainwashing centre by members of the "610 Office" (1). When they could not force Ms. Cheng into renouncing her belief, they hung her up by handcuffs outside during the freezing cold of winter, wearing only thin clothing. Cheng Zongzhan escaped from this brainwashing centre, but since then she had to stay away from home to avoid being arrested again.

Due to the persecution she faced, her health deteriorated, and she was never well again. On May 11, 2004, Cheng Zongzhan died.

(1) "610 Office" -- A bureau specifically created by the Chinese government to persecute Falun Gong. It has absolute power over each level of administration in the Party, as well as over the political and judiciary branches.
