Letter from Liz Lynne MEP 11 March 2004

Dear Mr Dee,

Thank you for your letter describing the treatment of Falun Gong practitioners in Paris during the Chinese New Year celebrations. The violations of their right to peaceful freedom of expression are extremely worrying, and deplorable.

Religious persecution is a subject with which I am most concerned, and a subject on which I have campaigned. Most recently I collected 3500 signatures from Muslim groups in Birmingham protesting against the French government’s ban on the wearing of articles of faith; the recent treatment of Falun Gong practitioners is even more worrying when seen in the context of widespread repression of human rights in France.

The Liberal Democrat party recognise the on-going struggles of the Falun Gong practitioners, and have written to the UK government on their behalf in the past. I have also contacted the French authorities personally, and requested of the Directorate General of the National Police that an investigation into this matter be conducted and that steps be taken to ensure such a situation will not arise in the future.

Yours sincerely,

Liz Lynne MEP
