Tang Meijun was 49 and worked at the Chongqing Railroad Bureau. After the persecution of Falun Gong began in July 1999, she went to Beijing twice to appeal for Falun Gong. As a result, her home was ransacked several times, and she was arrested on many occasions. Twice she was sent to forced labour camps. On December 30, 2003, she died as a result of torture at the Chongqing City Women's Labour Camp.

Upon learning of the death of Tang Meijun, her family members rushed to the labour camp. Later they were taken to the Heping Hospital in Jiangbei District of Chongqing City. In the hospital, the police fabricated a scene, pretending she was still being treated, when in fact she had died already. There was blood all over her body. Her neck was full of bleeding holes that seemed to be the result of pricking by some sharp objects. Her fingers were black and blue. Around her waist, a big patch of skin and flesh had been torn off. At the upper end of her thighs, there were also holes, as well as marks resulting from cuts by a knife. Her clothes were also bloodstained. Tang's family were shocked and asked the police how she could have died in such a terrible way. The police faltered, "She committed suicide." In order to uphold justice, her family hired an lawyer. However, the police threatened the lawyer, saying, "The Party has been cracking down on Falun Gong these several years. How dare you come to the labour camp and defend Falun Gong!" Under pressure, he did not say anything. The public prosecutor was also present.

Despite the bloody facts, the police totally denied the crimes they had committed. The coroner claimed that the wounds were simply marks on the corpse and announced that it was a death from natural causes. Tang Meijun's brother took several pictures of her body. However, the police forcibly took him to the labour camp and forced him to turn in the film. The police cremated her body hurriedly. At present, her mother still does not know the tragic news. Her family members worry that her mother, over 70, could not stand the shock, so they haven't told her yet.
