Dun Laoghaire student Liu Feng was illegally arrested following his return to China during the 1999 Christmas break because he peacefully appealed against the persecution of Falun Gong. Afterwards, he was released but not allowed to return to Ireland to continue his studies. In 2002, when Liu Feng was shopping before he tried to return to Ireland, he was illegally kidnapped and detained in Dalian Forced Labour Camp.

It is said that Liu Feng has been released but is currently in hospital. This only occurs when a labour camp detainee has been tortured or is close to death, and prison authorities intend to shift the blame away from themselves. Because of this, practitioners believe that Liu Feng is in serious danger.

On January the 20th, Irish practitioners reported that they fear for Liu Feng’s life. His rapidly deteriorating health has forced the Chinese authorities to discharge him for urgent medical treatment. The practitioners also stated that they recently received confirmation from a Chinese Embassy official that Liu Feng is in a very weak condition. Two months ago it was reported that his family members fear that he may die at the Yaojia Forced Labour Camp, where at least seven Falun Gong practitioners have been confirmed dead from maltreatment.

Trinity College student Zhao Ming, who suffered brutal torture daily during his 22-month detention at the camp after refusing to denounce Falun Gong, warned last week that Liu Feng may be in grave danger. They would never release a practitioner earlier than the original end of the sentence unless he or she is on the brink of death. Liu Feng must be in a very dangerous situation that has been caused by torture or a lengthy hunger strike.

According to the Irish Falun Gong Information Centre in Dublin, Falun Gong is a practice of meditation and exercises with teachings based on the universal principles of Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance. Since its introduction in 1992, it quickly spread throughout China and is now being practised in more than fifty countries. Jiang Zemin outlawed the practice in July 1999, fearful of anything touching the hearts and minds of more citizens than the Communist Party. Hundreds of thousands have been detained, with more than 100,000 being sentenced to forced labour camps, typically without trial.

It was further reported that Irish Falun Dafa practitioners held a protest outside the Chinese Embassy on Tuesday January 13, to lobby the Chinese government to release and return Liu Feng and Yang Fang to Ireland; both have been unlawfully detained because they practise Falun Gong.

Finally a delegation from the European Union, who met with the Chinese Prime Minister and other officials last November during the Sino-European Summit, were asked to highlight the cases of Liu Feng and Yang Fang. Their situation is still believed to be unsafe.
