The Harbin Drug Rehabilitation Centre in Heilongjiang Province uses various methods to persecute Falun Gong practitioners. The police at the Centre ask Falun Gong practitioners if they will continue to practise Falun Gong; if the practitioners answer yes, the police will direct a number of prisoners to beat them up.

The police also force Falun Gong practitioners to do excessive amounts of work every day. Sometimes, in order to finish assignments on time, the practitioners have to work all night.

Falun Gong practitioners are forced to go through brainwashing sessions every day. They are not given enough to eat and are not allowed to sleep. The steadfast practitioners receive even more vicious treatment; their legs are tied to the bed and they are hung up by their hands.

Some practitioners are taken to the basement, stripped of their clothes and forced to sit in a barrel filled with water. The police then pour cold water on the practitioners' body, cover their heads with metal basins, and apply the electric baton to the water. Every time the practitioners get a shock, their heads feel like they are going to explode, and their arms and legs become numb. It is unbearable. Some practitioners become totally disoriented, their whole body and face becomes swollen, and they suffer fecal and urinary incontinence.

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Li Shufen of Hegang City, was illegally arrested by the police on May 14, 2002. Later she was sent to the Harbin Drug Rehabilitation Centre and persecuted for a long time. She is now paralyzed as a result of the torture.

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Jiang Rongzhen of Jixi City was tortured to death in December of 2002.

Falun Gong practitioners have not succumbed to the torture. Practitioner Ms. Li Lihua took down the Drug Rehabilitation Centre's ill-gotten "honour sign," an act that shook the police.
