On December 1, 2003, Ms. Foo Yeong-Ching, the fiance' of U.S. Dafa practitioner Charles Li, learned additional news after a telephone conversation with a U.S. consular official in Shanghai. She learned that Jiang Zemin and the state terror organisation known officially as the "610 Office," have stepped up their efforts to brainwash Charles Li. Inmates who receive life sentences in prison for selling drugs have been directed to verbally abuse and humiliate Charles Li.

Foo Yeong-Ching said the U.S. consul visited Charles Li on November 25 and learned that the authorities had intensified their mental torture of Charles Li. Two new video cameras were installed in the prison to monitor him; one of them is in his cell and the other is in the room where Charles is forced to view Dafa-slandering videos. The guards instigated inmates to seize the 60-page account Charles had written and destroyed it. The prison authorities also unreasonably demanded that U.S. officials ask Charles to admit to fabricated crimes.

Currently, two kinds of brainwashing sessions are forced on Charles Li - one is brainwashing in a group and the other is on an individual basis. There is also a class setting where Charles is forced to view Dafa-slandering videos.

In the individual brainwashing session, a man named Shao Gong from the State Police Department attempts to brainwash Charles. He talks to Charles from one to three hours a day and threatens that if Charles refuses to see him there will be trouble awaiting Charles. Once, Shao Gong didn't show up for a week. Charles believed that he had gone to receive more training in the use of brainwashing techniques. When Shao Gong came back, his approach was different.

The group brainwashing is two hours in the morning and two to three hours in the afternoon. Nine people are in attendance. Others present include guards, police officers and the six inmates who monitor Charles around the clock. Inmates who received life sentences in prison for selling drugs are directed to increase their cursing and humiliation of Charles in this group brainwashing. The prison authorities claim the "group brainwashing class" is a "standard class" the jail prepares for Charles, but it is in fact malicious mental torture.

The attempted brainwashing with videotapes consists of about one hour of anti-Falun Gong videos every night. Charles is forced to watch these, followed by one hour of news in China and other propaganda.

The world-renowned Science magazine recently pointed out that, "mental pain is consistent with the pain from the material body"

Experts on China issues have pointed out that forcing a person to give up his belief is the same as forcing him to give up his conscience and give up the dignity of being human. Forced brainwashing is annihilative, psychological persecution; the pain and aftermath is usually more cruel than physical torture. The Jiang regime likes to use psychological manipulation, while Jiang Zemin's persecution of Falun Gong has intensified and magnified this dark aspect. In fact, physical tortures are also used for psychological manipulation, and the goal is to force Falun Gong practitioners to give up their belief and right to practice.

Foo Yeong-Ching said that Charles Li had reported two incidents of attacks against him to the U.S. consular officials that took place in November. The first one took place when Charles was reading a 60-page account he wrote when some inmates, instigated by guards, seized it from him and destroyed it. Another attack came from inmate Li Luming who beat Charles in front of prison guards. The guards not only did not stop him, they said even if Charles reported this to U.S. officials, nothing would change.

U.S. consulate officials said they would protest the verbal abuse incidents against Charles to the Chinese government and also lodge a complaint that the guards did not stop the inmates from beating Charles as well as the situation about the forced brainwashing.

Jiang Zemin's group also told the U.S. officials of fabricated incidents about Charles. They said he would behave badly whenever someone visits him. Furthermore, they asked U.S. officials not to say anything to him that is not "helpful" and demanded that U.S. officials ask Charles to admit to "crimes" he never committed.
