When Bodhidarma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, saw that Buddhism had no hope in India, he went to northern China in AD527 to spread Buddhism. When he came to Yangtze river, there was no bridge or boat, so he stood on a stalk of reed, and crossed the river with his supernormal capabilities. This painting displays the sight of "Crossing the river on a stalk of reed".
