Liu Feng and Yang Fang are students of Dun Laoghaire College in Ireland. However, when they returned to China for Christmas in 1999, they were illegally arrested after peacefully appealing to the government to stop the brutal persecution of Falun Gong. They were later released, but were unlawfully prevented from returning to Ireland to continue their studies.

In 2002, Liu Feng was illegally kidnapped whilst shopping prior to his return to Ireland. He was then sent to Yaojia Labour Camp in Dalian. His current whereabouts is unknown. In the same year, Yang Fang was illegally prevented from boarding a plane returning to Ireland. She was forcefully taken back to her hometown in Shenyang Province.

Both Liu Feng and Yang Fang retain their student status for the time being, and the principal, teachers and students of their college in Ireland have paid close attention to their situation.

The only reason that the Jiang regime uses to justify not allowing these two students to return to Ireland is that they are Falun Gong practitioners, and this has even caused them to be illegally imprisoned and persecuted. This is entirely against China’s fundamental national policy of reform and liberalisation, and causes serious damage to China's reputation. The authorities in Shenyang and Dalian should be held responsible for these matters!

At the 59th session of the U.N. Human Rights Commission, the Irish Foreign Minister commented:

“Threats to, and violations of, human rights are the greatest source of insecurity in the world today. Where a State threatens human rights, it threatens not only the security of its own people but also the security of the international community. Therefore the whole international community is legitimately and rightly concerned at situations where human rights and human security are threatened or violated. A country which is not prepared to embrace a strong domestic human rights policy is unlikely to be a credible advocate for the promotion and protection of human rights in its external relation.”

At a conference attended by the joint committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a non-governmental human rights organisation, the Irish Assistant Foreign Minister mentioned that "human rights is an integral part of Ireland’s foreign policy".

At present, the Irish government is paying close attention to the situation of Liu Feng and Yang Fang.
