Mr Yang Lianwu, around 70 years old, is a retired engineer from the Neijiang City Textile Factory in Sichuan Province. He used to have many diseases, however after becoming a Falun Dafa practitioner, not only were his diseases cured, but his gray hair turned black. His wife, a doctor, was deeply moved by the miracle of Falun Dafa, so she started cultivating with her husband.

After July 20, 1999, when the government banned Falun Dafa, Yang Lianwu's wife went to Beijing to appeal to the government to stop persecuting Falun Dafa. She was detained for 40 days and fined 6000 Yuan. [500 Yuan is the average monthly income for an urban worker in China.] 300 Yuan is deducted each month from her retirement pay, although she only receives 400 Yuan per month. Their son and daughter both were dismissed from their jobs and receive no income at all because their parents practise Falun Gong.

Yang Lianwu was arrested while the police were searching his home. They fined him another 6000 Yuan. Yang Lianwu refused to go along with this illegal persecution, so the police detained him for more than 1 year and still have not released him. Although he is 70 years old, the police illegally sentenced him to 3 years in a labour camp and sent him to Deyang Prison in Sichuan Province.

After enduring heavy labour, mental and physical torture, and severe living conditions, he collapsed one day, and his life was in imminent danger. The labour camp sent him to the hospital in an attempt to rescue him, and conducted surgery on his head. The prison feared that they would have to pay more medical costs, so they notified his family to take him home on parole. However, the Neijiang City "610 Office" [an agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong, with absolute power over each level of administration in the Party and all other political and judiciary systems] mercilessly overruled the decision. Yang Lianwu is still locked up in the Deyang Labour Prison despite the fact that his life is in danger.

We hope the international organisations that are interested in human rights pay attention to this situation. We request that the Neijiang City government release Yang Lianwu, so that he can recover properly.
