A Dalian City, Liaoning Province resident passed away less than six months after she was released from 13 months of detention for practising Falun Gong, a mind-body discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999. She was 71.

Ms. Song Shuchun was arrested at home on November 12, 2018. Another 22 practitioners were arrested on the same day and seven were later convicted, with four being sentenced to eight years or more. Ms. Song was sentenced to three years with four years probation by the Shahekou District Court.

Ms. Song started having trouble taking in food in November 2019. The problem continued even after she was released from the Yaojia Detention Center on December 11, 2019. She had a mass growing in her stomach and her abdomen was distended. Despite her condition, the police continued to monitor her at home.

Ms. Song’s health quickly deteriorated over the next few months. She passed away around 11 p.m. on May 30, 2020.

Ms. Song took up Falun Gong in 1999. Because of not renouncing her faith, she was arrested and detained in March 2001 and on October 22, 2014, after being reported for distributing calendars with information about Falun Gong.
