A Fushun City, Liaoning Province, resident suffered from poor health after serving three years for not renouncing her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Shan Changying had been feeling weak and unable to eat since she was released on September 22, 2017. She was diagnosed with cancer in late 2018. She couldn't think clearly and slept most of the day. She passed away in October 2018, a month after she was discharged from the hospital. She was 72.

Ms. Shan began to practise Falun Gong in 1997. Her health problems quickly improved and she was full of energy every day after learning the meditation exercises.

After the communist regime ordered the persecution in 1999, Ms. Shan was arrested six times for raising awareness about her faith.

Her latest arrest was on September 23, 2014. The police initially told her family that they were going to release her in seven days. But a week later, her family was notified that the local procuratorate had formally approved her arrest.

Ms. Shan was later sentenced to three years in the Xinfu District Court. She was tormented mentally and physically while serving time in prison, which ultimately led to her death.
