Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Jiang Deting from Liaoyang County in Liaoning Province was arrested and detained on June 28, 2016. He was released on medical parole on July 7, and passed away that evening.

His family suspects that he was subjected to torture, as he had incurred unexplained injuries on his back while in custody. He may have also sustained internal injuries.

Several officials went to see Mr. Jiang's relatives the day after his death, and invited them to their office to try to settle Mr. Jiang's case.

His wife was not present as she is serving a prison term for filing a criminal complaint against former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin for the persecution that she and her husband have suffered for refusing to renounce their faith in Falun Gong. She was arrested in November 2015 and sentenced to 18 months.

Mr. Jiang lived in Jiangjunfang Village in Xiaobeihe Township.

He was arrested in May 2001 for practising Falun Gong and taken to the Shizuizi Forced Labor Camp to serve one-and-a-half years of forced labour. He was released in November 2002.

Mr. Jiang, a thin man who weighed less than 100 pounds, was forced to carry cement bags and climb many flights of stairs. He was once made to carry more than 20 bags of cement on his back to the 4th floor. The friction from the bags rubbing against his skin caused his neck to bleed.

Officials from the village and township continued to harass Mr. Jiang after his release. They tried to pressure him to give up practicing Falun Gong.

Officers from the Xiaobeihe Police Station went to his home in August 2006 to take him to a brainwashing center. Mr. Jiang managed to escape, but was forced to stay away from home to avoid further persecution. His 5-acre farm was left unattended.
