Ms. Mu Suxia was arrested for installing satellite dishes that enable viewers to receive overseas-based New Tang Dynasty Television (NTDTV). NTDTV is banned by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) because the programming is uncensored by the CCP and does not conform to the Communist Party line. She was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison.

Ms. Mu was in good health prior to the arrest. However, she became very ill while at the Zhengzhou Detention Centre. She was released on medical parole in May 2014. When she left the detention centre, her entire body was swollen, and the ensuing medical treatment to save her life failed. She passed away on December 22nd, 2014.

The Arrest

Ms. Mu was arrested by three plainclothes officers on August 15th, 2013. The police ransacked her home and confiscated personal property including equipment for installing satellite dishes.

The Gongyi City Court tried Ms. Mu on March 11th, 2014. Her attorneys pled not guilty for her and pointed out the legality behind installing satellite dishes. Ms. Mu was sentenced to prison nonetheless, despite having broken no laws.
