On May 28th, their grief turned to anger when they learned that his body had been secretly cremated by guards at the Haidian Detention Centre.

Mr. Deng, 43, graduated from Beijing Electric Power University with a Master's degree in finance in 1997. He began practising Falun Gong in 1995. After the brutal persecution began, he was imprisoned twice, for a total of 12 years, for his belief. Mr. Deng was arrested again less than a year after his last incarceration.

Circumstances surrounding Mr. Deng's death unknown

On April 27th, 2013, Deng Huaiying was arrested for distributing materials exposing the persecution of Falun Gong in the Haidian District. He was taken to the Haidian Detention Centre.

Generally, people are first incarcerated in the First Division on the first floor. However, the guards locked him up on the second floor, saying that every cell on the first floor already held detained Falun Gong practitioners. Mr. Deng began a hunger strike immediately to protest his arrest. Details of what happened to Mr. Deng in detention are not known, only that the guards took him to the emergency room when he was dying.

While his family was seeking the facts from the police department, the Haidian Detention Centre secretly cremated Mr. Deng's body.

Hard labour in Tuanhe Forced Labour Camp

Mr. Deng was subjected to a year of forced labour in the notorious Tuanhe Forced Labour Camp in Beijing in 2001. Guards forced him and other practitioners, including Mr. Zhao Ming, Mr. Qin Wei, and Mr. Liu Jiankai, to clean pipes, clean toilets at night, and get up at 5:00 a.m. to dig pipeline trenches. When other inmates were allowed to rest at night, Falun Gong practitioners were forced to “sit on a bench” in a library to endure brainwashing until midnight. If they resisted the brainwashing and physical abuse, the guards beat them and poured cold water over them. They forced them to squat in painful positions, deprived them of sleep, and shocked them with electric batons.

Ten years in prison

On November 18th, 2002, Mr. Deng got a call from a former classmate, who told him to pick up a parcel in Qinghe in the Haidian District. When he went there, he was arrested. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison. Mr. Deng was first incarcerated in Qianjin Prison in 2003 and then transferred to Jinzhong Prison in 2004. He was released in June 2012.
