She was taken to the Pingdu Detention Centre. Fourteen days later, she was transferred to the Dashan Detention Centre in Qingdao City. She was sentenced to three and a half years in prison by a Pingdu City Court on July 19th. Ms. Liu is incarcerated in Shandong Women's Prison.

Gaining a New Life After Practising Falun Gong

Ms. Liu Yaqi, 44, is from Caojia Village, Dianzi Town, Pingdu City. She moved to Northeastern China. She was in a poor mental state after divorcing her husband, and also suffered from many illnesses, including stomach problems, cervical spondylosis, sciatica, prolapse of lumbar intervertebral disc, gynecopathy, and insomnia.

Ms. Liu later moved to Zhangshe Town in Pingdu with her sister's help. Her sister is a Falun Gong practitioner. Shortly after Ms. Liu started practising Falun Gong in May 2005, her illnesses disappeared. Her body was free of illness. She was happy and became more outgoing.

Ms. Liu opened a clothing store in Zhangshe. She became eager to share with others the extraordinary benefits of practising Falun Gong.

Detained in a Brainwashing Centre for Two Months

However, Ms. Liu was reported to authorities. Six police officers broke into Ms. Liu's home on July 16th, 2006, and arrested her. Ms. Liu was taken to a brainwashing centre run by the Pingdu 610 Office.

Ms. Liu's sister and brother-in-law Mr. Wang Mingliang went to the brainwashing centre to visit her on August 3rd, 2006. Because they are both Falun Gong practitioners, the 610 Office staff arrested Mr. Wang on the spot. About eight staff members beat Ms. Liu's sister. They deceived her by saying that they were sending her home. They searched her home with the cooperation of officers from the Dianzi Town Police Station. Not only did they steal Falun Gong lecture videos, CDs, cards, and other materials, but they also vandalised the characters Zhen, Shan, Ren ("Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance") painted on a wall in the courtyard.

The people searching the house were ashamed to let others know who they were and what they were doing. The car they were driving had no licence plates. When asked who allowed them to do what they were doing, they said, "The law allows us to do this."

Ms. Liu Yaqi was released after two months of detention in the brainwashing centre.

Sentenced to Prison

Ms. Liu Yaqi remarried in 2008. Her husband used to have a hot temper and was destructively aggressive. His temper improved a lot with Ms. Liu's help.

Ms. Liu was speaking with people about Falun Gong and handing out Shen Yun [a world-class traditional Chinese cultural show] DVDs in Dianzi Market on the morning of April 14th, 2012, when she was arrested by Pingdu 610 Office personnel Dai Yugang, Pingdu Domestic Security Team officer Liu Jie, and others. She was later taken to the Dianzi Town Police Station. At noon, Li Guangwen, the head of Caojia Village, led Liu Jie and four officers from the Dianzi Town Police Station to Ms. Liu's home and ransacked it. Li Guangwen twice led officers to Ms. Liu's home. About six more officers later came and confiscated a laptop computer, two printers, a DVD writer, three boxes of DVDs, an EVD player, Falun Gong books, and other personal belongings.

Dianzi Town Police Station officer Xu Yueyong compiled the data and took Ms. Liu to the Pingdu Detention Centre in the afternoon. Fourteen days later, she was transferred to the Dashan Detention Centre in Qingdao City.

Ms. Liu was taken to a small room in the detention centre on July 19th, 2012. The judge from the Pingdu City Court pronounced her sentence without any court proceedings. Ms. Liu was sentenced to three and a half years in prison. Ms. Liu tore up the verdict on the spot to protest the sentence. She is now incarcerated in Shandong Women's Prison.
