A Few Words On The Root Cause Of Being Unable To Search Inside Oneself

Being unable to search inside oneself manifests in different degrees at different levels. At the lower levels, one cannot let go of defending one's own notion of selfishness. One fears being hurt, losing something, and having less than others.

In fact, searching inside is not being weak, but a wise action and a good start toward goodness.

"True improvements come from letting go, not from gaining." ("Teaching the Fa at the 2002 Fa Conference in Philadelphia, U.S.A.")

Searching inside does not mean one will truly lose something valuable, but in fact it means losing the useless, filthy human notions at the surface and the attachments these notions give rise to. These are bad things that can restrict a person firmly to an undesirable realm and bring that person to the brink of destruction. For example, let's take for example a person being able to handle others not treating him well and say something bad about him. Why isn't he able to handle himself well? Isn't it the egotistical heart going after fame, personal gain, and making one's point or saving face?

Are these thoughts true reflections of ourselves? Can one's essential elements be taken away when others don't treat him well and say bad things about him? Can his cultivated gong [energy] be stolen away? In fact, he won't lose anything valuable. Instead, what he will lose are burdensome, filthy things.

Then, why are we still so reluctant to let them go? Why can't we give them up resolutely? Hasn't our Teacher told us, "True improvements come from letting go, not from gaining."? ("Teaching the Fa at the 2002 Fa Conference in Philadelphia, U.S.A.")
