A Chinese University with Worldwide Research Ties Persecutes Falun Gong Practitioners
On September 10th, 2006, Falun Dafa practitioner Mr. Qiu Min, over 30 years old, was taken away by security officers from Sanxia University and the local 610 Office1. Mr. Qiu is a teacher at the College of Chemistry and Life Sciences at Sanxia University. Since July 20th, 1999, when the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) started the persecution of Falun Gong, several teachers at Sanxia University have been arrested and taken to a brainwashing centre by the university's CCP committee and 610 Office. The so-called anti-[slanderous term omitted] organisation of Yichang City, Hubei Province, was particularly active during August 2006. The chairman of the organisation is Liu Defu, the president of Sanxia University. Mr. Qiu Min is a lab teacher at the college. He is very dedicated to his work and well liked by staff and students alike. When his colleagues heard the news of his arrest, they were all shocked. They think the university officials' sense of justice and moral standards are severely lacking. There are three known Falun Dafa practitioners at Sanxia University: Qiu Min, Zhou Qiang, and Zhang Zhenglin from the College of Foreign Languages. Zhou Qiang and Zhang Zhenglin, both of whom the students like, have been forced out of their teaching positions and are no longer allowed to teach. According to the Minghui/Clearwisdom website, Zhang Zhenglin, Zhou Qiang, and Qiu Min were taken to Tangxiunhu Brainwashing Centre on April 2004, June 2005, and September 11th, 2006, respectively. As of September 17th Qiu Min is still in the brainwashing centre. The Yichang City 610 Office is the group mainly responsible for these actions. The two later incidents also had the cooperation of the university security and political office and the Chemistry and Life Sciences College. The college president, Huang Yinping, either remained silent or passively cooperated in both cases. However, CCP Committee Secretary Zheng Zejun was involved in the planning and participated in the seizures. (See other persecution activities in the Clearwisdom report at http://www.clearwisdom.net/emh/articles/2006/1/3/68612.html) Currently, the university has set up cooperative relations with 54 universities and scientific research institutes around the world. Among them, Professor Alan G. MacDiarmid from the University of Pennsylvania cooperated with the university and established the Alan MacDiarmid Regenerative Energy Research Centre in 2006. This research centre is tied to the College of Chemistry and Life Sciences. The director of the research centre, Dr. Huang Yinping, is also the president of the college. Alan G. MacDiarmid is one of the winners of the 2000 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. It is said that Professor MacDiarmid will be working at Sanxia University for one month next year in order to review the operation of the research centre named after him. In addition, the assistant president of the University of Texas at Dallas, renowned physicist Dr. Feng Daxuan, also collaborates with Sanxia University.
