Letter from Global Mission to Rescue Persecuted Falun Gong Practitioners to Other NGOs Dear colleagues: With the 60th Session of United Nations Commission on Human Rights in Geneva quickly approaching, we write, on behalf of the 40 international human rights organizations signed below, to ask you to please join us to encourage the United States in taking the lead to draft a China Resolution to condemn Falun Gong persecution and other human rights abuses and to urge all countries with representatives at the 60th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Commission to support passage of such a resolution. According to Falun Dafa Information Center, the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, and international human rights organizations, China's human rights record continued worsening in the past year. The violent assault on Falun Gong, a peaceful spiritual practice whose three principles are Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance, is a prime example of that very injustice. And the Falun Gong persecution, like other human rights abuses in China, violates the International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights, Universal Declaration of Human Rights and China's own constitution. We understand that U.S. has tried six times in the past to get a China resolution passed in UNCHR. We have not succeeded, mostly due to the efforts by representatives of the People's Republic of China to oppose the consideration or passage of such a resolution by intimidating and financially coaxing other members of U.N. Commission. Last year the Commission did not introduce a China resolution, and China, under the leadership of Jiang Zemin, took the Commission's unwillingness as a sign of weakness, as a statement that China human rights issues had faded from the consciousness of world citizens. However, we believe that more and more countries have now realized that China's criminalization of innocence is not only destabilizing and demoralizing China, but also the world. As we know, the persecution against Falun Gong is no longer confined to mainland Chinese people. Dr. Charles Lee, a United States citizen, was arrested as he arrived China on January 22, 2003, and was sentenced to a 3-year prison term for no crime but his intention to support Falun Gong. Over the past 4 years, China's diplomatic corps has been actively involved in blacklisting, harassing and persecuting overseas Falun Gong practitioners; and exerting diplomatic and financial pressure on foreign nations, such as Iceland, Germany, Thailand and France, to stop Falun Gong practitioners from holding peaceful protests. These acts by the Jiang regime have greatly endangered the national security of these nations, and jeopardized the principles of freedom, justice and democracy cherished in the West. Hence, we trust more countries will stand up for freedoms and justice. To show our support to the UNHRC to introduce and pass a resolution to condemn China's persecution towards Falun Gong practitioners and all human rights atrocities, we pass the attached resolution. We sincerely invite you to join us by cosponsoring this resolution. We look forward to working with you, shoulder to shoulder, for a better world. Sincerely, Dr. Haiying He, President On behalf of Global Mission to Rescue Persecuted Falun Gong Practitioners www.globalrescue.net Published: Wednesday 17th March 2004 http://www.clearharmony.net/articles/200403/18431.html |
