Radio Free Asia: European Union Representatives Show Concern for the Widespread Violation of Human Rights in China

1st April 2003, Geneva, Radio Free Asia

Representatives of the European Union have expressed their concern for the broad violations of human rights occurring in China. The Greek Ambassador indicated that although China has strengthened communication with the international community about human rights and has showed improvements in some areas, such as reforming the legal system and releasing some Tibetan political prisoners, it still imposes the death penalty, brutal corporal punishment and cruel torture to repress people who work for democracy. Also, the human rights of those who publish articles unpopular to the government on the internet, as well as Christian communities and Falun Gong practitioners, are being violated.
