Poem: Yesterday and Today

By Xiao-lian

Yesterday’s understanding was too shallow.
Today’s understanding will not be unchanged.
Tempered in cultivation through harsh trials
The vajra[1] will eventually form atop the pure lotus.
Abandon attachments, cling to nothing.
The boat sails rapidly,
Moving swiftly on.
Ahead lies a glorious future,
Why be attached to the past
Restrained by your own sentimentality?
