Case 2-4: German Citizen Harassed

Country: Germany
Name: Walter Krickl (German), 55
Personal Details: Entrepreneur (male)
Location of incident: Stuttgart, Germany

Description:
On April 1, 2001 at 9:15 a.m. Mr. Krickl received a telephone call from a German national, who did not disclose his name. The caller said that he had overheard a conversation at an airport between two Chinese nationals. He continued by saying that he recognised one of the Chinese nationals as being a member of a Chinese delegation, and that as an entrepreneur he had a lot of dealings with China over the last 10 years. He also said that Mr. Krickl’s name had been mentioned frequently during their conversation.

The caller warned not to take anything from the Chinese lightly, because they are worse than any other secret service. He also mentioned that it might be a good idea for him to change his identity.

Mr. Krickl commented that he “could clearly discern that some kind of a Chinese individual had been behind the phone call”.

Following this telephone conversation, Mr. Krickl contacted a federal prosecutor, Mr. Christ, and related the incident to him. Mr. Christ referred the matter to the National Security Office. After contacting the federal prosecutor, he told him that a Mr. Fleischer was handling this matter.
