Australian Citizen’s Promise to His Detained Fiancée in China: My Dear Beloved Xin along with other Australian people I will do my best to rescue you! Mr. Lee, an Australian citizen of Chinese origin, was shocked to receive news from his hometown in China that his fiancée had disappeared and his would-be parents-in-law were very worried. Mr. Lee hurried to take a flight to Shanghai. Although he received news from the police that his fiancée had been arrested, he still had no chance to see her. All his time was wasted on dealing with the policemen. He did not know which Chinese law he himself had violated when practising Falun Gong overseas. He only knew that although he did his best to be a law-abiding citizen during his stay in China, the policemen still withdrew his visa and forced him to buy a non-stop ticket to fly back to Sydney, Australia.
On the airplane, Mr. Lee’s heart was shivering On the plane to Shanghai, Mr. Lee was sleepless. In Australia, almost every day on the radio, TV, or in the newspaper there was news about Falun Gong practitioners who have lost their homes and families; even female practitioners are raped and treated in inhumane ways. Among Mr. Lee’s friends in Sydney is a young man whose sister in Guangzhou was sentenced to a labour re-education camp for two years. Another girl’s mother in Sichuan has lost contact with her family after her arrest and detention in a labour re-education camp. And still another mother of a two-year-old daughter had not been able to contact her husband after he “disappeared.” Then this poor wife received news from overseas media that her husband had been tortured to death. Mr. Lee saw in person how half of this women’s hair had turned grey overnight because of grief. With these tragic stories in his mind, Mr. Lee was feeling shaky. He dared not imagine what the disappearance of his fiancée meant. He called all of his relatives, friends, and even China’s Public Security Ministry, but no one knew where his fiancée was. Therefore, he had no other choice but to fly back to China.
Experience of Trying to Find His Financee in China During his stay in China, a policeman in charge of guarding Mr. Lee said, “We treated you very well, didn’t we? The articles in Minghui Web condemn us for breaking the heads of Falun Gong practitioners. We didn’t beat you.” Mr. Lee replied, “What crime did I commit so that you would beat me?” The policeman was stunned. “Why did you want to come back? You could just make a phone call, or you could ask your relatives in Shanghai to look for your fiancée,” continued the policeman. Mr. Lee said, “If your girlfriend or wife disappeared, what would you do?” Mr. Lee went on to explain that in Sydney he kept calling his fiancée’s family for 24 hours. Besides, his relatives in Shanghai had searched high and low for his fiancée. What is more, he even called China’s Public Security Ministry and the 610 “Office” just to get no answer. He couldn’t help but to come back to Shanghai to find out the answer. “Even if she had violated the law, the police should have informed me and her family of how many years’ imprisonment she was sentenced to and where she was. If I knew how she is now, I would have settled down. If not, I will be very worried about her. So many Falun Gong practitioners have been beaten to death. Who knows what might have happened to her?” The policeman hesitated for a while, and said, “You are not likely to see her. I know what had happened to your girlfriend.” The true story was that the recent distribution of Falun Gong Truth CDs surprised the police. The police suspected that Mr. Lee’s fiancée took part in distributing Falun Gong Truth CDs, because she was not only good at using the computer, but also unwilling to give up practising Falun Gong. She was listed as the main suspect. The police secretly arrested her; none was allowed to see her or to send her clothing. Mr. Lee felt his heart shivering. Anything terrible might happen to her fiancée during her custody. Mr. Lee had heard about so many stories about those who had been coerced by torture and beatings during the Cultural Revolution period. What a pity that Mr. Lee’s fiancée had almost finished her application to go abroad and the Australian Embassy in Shanghai had sent her the application form of physical examination. However, these letters were retained by China’s Public Security Ministry.
Clarifying the Truth to the 610 “Office People from the 610 office came to talk to Mr. Lee and said, “Now let’s get down to business﹒” Overseas people already know about the 610 office being an organization specially set up to persecute Falun Gong on mainland China. Mr Lee said seriously, “I don’t accept your interrogatory type conversation﹒ I am a Falun Gong practitioner﹒ what I want to tell you is that Falun Gong is wronged and will rehabilitate itself one day﹒ Truthfulness﹐ Compassion﹐ Forbearance can not be evil﹒” Mr. Lee said that many of his relatives and friends had asked him why so many people practised Falun Gong, and if there was something special about Falun Gong. After knowing the truth, some of them seemed awakened, claiming, “I just knew that there was something wonderful about Falun Gong. In fact, Falun Gong is so good. Now, I have come to know the truth. The government just put the wrong blame on Falun Gong.” Mr. Lee had also encountered some policemen who often raised the question, “Are you telling the truth?” It just proved that the policemen were starting to doubt what they had heard about Falun Gong from the propaganda. The official from 610 “Office” was stunned for a while, admitting that he had never heard something like that, saying nothing in response. He stopped talking about Falun Gong, and just mentioning some triviality, such as how to earn one’s living by doing his job.
Forced to buy another airplane ticket to leave China After hearing the ridiculous answer of the official, Mr. Lee’s elder sister retorted with anger, “For what reason did you arrest my brother and ask him to leave the country? What crime did my brother commit?!” The official replied, “This is a state secret which I cannot tell you!” Because Mr. Lee did not bring so much Chinese currency with him, the official demanded him to borrow money from his brother-in-law and even forced him to write a certificate, promising that he would return the $5500 borrowed from his brother-in-law. Mr. Lee said, “I have my round-trip ticket, but you force me to take a non-stop flight from Shanghai to Sydney, which costs me another $5500. You are just doing something harmful to others, yet without benefiting yourselves from it. Was my $5500 stolen? I still need to work hard to earn $5500! Don’t tell me that you are just carrying out orders. Even though you are ordered to send me out of China, you could still send me to Hong Kong. In that way, I would not have wasted my round-trip ticket. Why don’t you act according to your own conscience?” At the customs in the arrival terminal, Mr. Lee had many opportunities to exchange his understanding of Falun Gong with the inspectors. He found that after they realized the truth, at least their attitudes became relatively friendly. But another person from “610 Office” was rather rude. He gave an order to take photos of Mr. Lee but Mr Lee refused to do so. Mr Lee said: “Perhaps you have been in the habit of not treating Chinese as humans. But I have been living overseas with freedom, and have been accustomed to being treated as a human. I came back here to visit my relatives. There is no way for you not to treat me as a human. Human beings should live with dignity. Although you do not regard me as a human, I am still a human. If I am willing to have a picture taken, there would be no problem, and you may go ahead with it. If not, you are not entitled to force me to have a picture taken as I am not against any laws. Besides, I live my own life and do not follow your orders.” Eventually, they didn’t take any photos of Mr Lee.
After returning to Australia, he would tell more people about his personal observations as well as the situation of his fiancée and that of tens of thousands of ordinary Chinese people like her who are still enduring persecution because of their insistence on their beliefs. He wanted to have more people to pay attention to and to participate in the campaign against the human rights abuses in China. While looking at the land outside the cabin of the plane, he felt it was becoming farther and farther away from him and its size was getting smaller and smaller. He quietly blessed his fiancée, and looked forward to the day when she would be able to freely reunite with him. He contemplated: My dear beloved Xin, wait for me. I’ll definitely do my best to rescue you along with the Australian people!
